Conference Report

The Institute, in association with the University of Hyderabad (UoH) and the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT), hosted the CIT 2004 - the 7th International Conference on Information Technology, to provide a high quality forum for scientists, researchers, and academicians from various disciplines to present their latest research findings on various topics in the area of Information Technology and its Applications.

The CIT, organised by the Orissa Information Technology Society (OITS), has grown to emerge as one of the major International Conferences in India and is fast emerging as the premier forum for presentation of the latest research and development in the critical area of Information Technology. Although the natural focus of the conference, held from December 20-24, 2004, was on Computer Science, research contributes from management, business and other disciplines also formed an integral part of the deliberations.

The Beginning

Dr. Prasant Mohapatra, University of California at Davis, began the proceedings with his welcome address, wherein he provided a background of the previous conferences and informed the delegates that this is the first time that the CIT has moved out of Orissa.

General Chair Prof. Arun K. Pujari, University of Hyderabad, and Programme Chair Prof. V. P. Gulati, IDRBT, pointed to the emergence of Hyderabad as an educational hub, and the role that can be played by a conference like CIT to disseminate the research findings in the crucial area of Information Technology. Programme Chair Prof Gautam Das, University of Texas at Arlington, detailed the efforts that went into making this conference happen and Finance Chair Dr. P. Radha Krishna, IDRBT, set the tone for the conference by spelling out what’s in store for the delegates.

The first day of the conference was devoted to tutorials. In the forenoon session, Dr. Purnendu Sinha, Concordia University, Canada, spoke on Software Fault Tolerance and in the afternoon session, Dr. Mukesh. K. Mohania, IBM India Research Laboratory, presented the latest findings in the field of Data Warehousing and Data Mining

Professor Laxmi Narayan Bhuyan, University of California at Riverside, began the proceedings on the second day with the keynote talk on Research in Network Processes. The day was then distributed over two sessions of four papers each on Computational Intelligence and Neural Networks. Prof. Gopal Gupta, University of Texas at Dallas, concluded the day with the invited talk on Software Engineering: A Logic Programming and Semantics Based Framework.

The third day of the conference started off with the invited talk of Prof A. G. Cohn, University of Leeds on Steps towards Cognitive Vision. The other focal areas of the day included Databases, Communication Networks, Mobile and Adhoc Networks, and Security. Seventeen papers in these areas were presented. During the last day of the conference, eighteen papers in the areas of Security, Software Engineering, Signal and Image Processing, and Internet and WWW Based Computing were presented.

Papers & Awards

The conference received over 250 contributes from over 27 countries and the programme committee, consisting of eminent researchers, academicians and practitioners, finally selected 43 full papers and 47 poster papers. While the full papers were published in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS 3356) Series by Springer, the poster papers were published by the Universities Press.

Mr. Young Gook Ra, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Seoul, South Korea, won the Prof. Amiya K. Pujari Award for his paper entitled, Relational Schema Evolution for Program Independency and Ms Anita Das, Department of Mathematics, IIT, Delhi, bagged the Prof. Narayan Misra IT Award for her paper A Linear Time Algorithm for constructing Tree 4-Spanner in 2-Trees.

Over 165 delegates, from about 27 countries including the United States of America, South Korea, Spain, Australia, and Canada participated in the conference. The conference dinner was organised at Dhola-ri-dhani, the Rajasthani ethnic village in the outskirts of Hyderabad. The content and management of the conference were highly appreciated.
